Dealing with Ringing in Ears Symptoms

How to Cope with Ringing in Ear Symptoms

One day, you started hearing a slight ringing in your ears. It went away soon enough, and you stopped worrying. Then it showed up again and stayed around a little longer, but it was gone and things were okay. Now it’s back again, and this time it seems like it’s permanent. This is tinnitus.

It might sound like a poor way of dealing with the problem, but one of the best ways you can treat tinnitus is to learn to ignore it. Never letting yourself become too focused on tinnitus will mean that it slowly begins to become less and less of a problem in your life. Unfortunately there are no pills you can take to get rid of tinnitus in one go (in fact, drugs and antibiotics are often attributed as the cause of tinnitus) so dealing with the problem over a long-term basis is what you’ll have to do.

Coping At Night Time

The most difficult time to deal with tinnitus is usually when you’re in bed, because at this time there’s usually nothing to listen to but the sounds of tinnitus. There are few things you can do to reduce or ignore these symptoms.

One is to make sure that you’re physically tired when it’s time to sleep. This will mean that the amount of time you spend tossing and turning, listening to the ringing will be reduced.

Some might be tempted to listen to the radio or television when they’re in bed in order to ignore the tinnitus. This isn’t such a good idea, as it’s going to habituate your ears to unnatural sounds, and soon enough you won’t be able to sleep without the TV on. If anything, it’s best to sleep with a window open, listening to the sounds of nature. This is actually preferable to being in a completely silent room, as you’ll have noise to distract your mind from the ringing in ears symptoms.

Changing Your Lifestyle

What you really want to do is make some key changes to the way you live. Change your diet to include far less salt. You really don’t need to put extra salt on anything, as the foods we eat usually have more than enough. Cut down on how much caffeine you’re consuming and give up the cigarettes. I know this is easier said than done, but these two things do a great deal of damage to your brain and ear connection, as the reduce the consistency with which blood pumps into your brain (also see – ringing ears & blood pressure). You also should consider drinking a lot less alcohol for the same reason.

In short, ringing in ears symptoms can only be tackled in a holistic manner. Improving your health while still listening to an iPod at high volume won’t solve the problem, nor will taking care to avoid loud sounds while still drinking and smoking heavily. While there are a number of valid remedies and ways to help tinnitus, there is no miracle cure, and you’ll need to remain consistently dedicated to improving the quality of your life in order to combat this problem.
