Sudden Ear Ringing

Sudden Ear RingingSudden ear ringing can come because of a few factors. The most common is a sharp, loud, probably high-pitched noise that has shocked the ears and the brain. Ear ringing may continue for up to a day after the noise has occurred, and could in fact be permanent. This is known as tinnitus. While it can be annoying, a great percentage of the population has to deal with this issue, and living with tinnitus and having a high quality of life is quite possible.

If you’ve come home from a dance club or concert with your ears ringing, you might start to fear that this constant sound could be permanent. If you’re lucky, you’ll wake up in the morning with the symptoms gone, however you should take this experience as a warning sign that permanent damage is possible. There are a few key things you can do in order to make sure sudden ear ringing or tinnitus doesn’t come back, and you’re able to live in peace and quiet.

Many rock stars have tinnitus as a result of constantly being exposed to unnaturally loud sounds. The Who’s Pete Townshend is completely deaf in one ear and has severe tinnitus in the other, due to constantly listening to playbacks at high volume, and a pyrotechnics explosion in the ‘60’s that caused sudden ear ringing. Neil Young also has severe tinnitus after his “Weld” concert tour, which featured huge Marshall amplifiers being played at high volume. Both of these musicians decided to move into quieter, acoustic styles of playing as they didn’t want further damage to their ears.

Among young people and at work places, there’s often peer pressure around, and the idea that it’s lame to wear earplugs and avoid high-volume sounds. If you’re facing this, you have to ask yourself whether it’s worth ignoring the sounds of your friends teasing you, or the constant sounds of high-pitched tinnitus. Common sense should render the right choice to be pretty obvious.

As mentioned above, sudden loud sounds can also be the cause of sudden ear ringing or tinnitus, so you’ll want to avoid as much as possible the places where this can occur. If you ever fire guns for any reason, make sure you’ve always got earplugs in place, and if you’re working with fireworks you should also keep them in. If your workplace exposes you to high volumes, occupational health and safety laws dictate that your employer should keep sound protection devices, either large ear-muffs or ear plugs, on hand at all times. It’s best to use these items to avoid ever getting permanent damage to your ears.

If you don’t want to experience the frustration of tinnitus, you have to make sure you’re doing everything you can to take care of your ears. Ear plugs are relatively inexpensive, and can protect you from sudden ear ringing, which may worsen into full-blown tinnitus. If you’re at a concert, firing range, or loud workplace, don’t be afraid to get the earplugs out!
